A short time after the Spanish Flu hits America in the early 20th century, a small farming community in upstate New York is trying to feel whole again. During this slow recovery several town members start to notice unsettling occurrences and unexplained events that confuse and terrify them. The fields and farms no longer feel safe. Animals are acting odd, weather is acting even stranger, and odd markings on bodies and bones start to collect in the pub stories and children's whispers.

The tale centers around one widowed shepherd and her farm outside of town. While driving her horse cart home from a neighbor's farm a paranormal attack makes her question her sanity while already trying to cope with the death of her husband. What happens to her and others farming through the harsh winter seems to match the monster of local folklore.

Birchthorn A Battenkill Valley Legend eBook Jenna Woginrich

For a short novella this was a bit of a slog to read due to the overuse of similes and odd idioms.
For example; a character makes a simple response "as plainly as a sales tax." Phrases like this stopped me in the flow of the story . By the way the first sales taxes began during the depression .
I almost gave this book 3 stars as it's the authors first attempt at non fiction but the writing was too sloppy. Would have made a better short story.

Birchthorn A Battenkill Valley Legend eBook Jenna Woginrich Reviews

When descriptions take up most of the page and don't contribute to the story I start to skim to try and get to the plot.
Writers Digest puts it best
"Believe it or not, you don’t want readers to admire your writing You want them to be so engaged in the story itself that they don’t notice the way you use words to shape it. Anything that jars readers loose from the grip of the story needs to go, even if it seems “literary.” Weed out figures of speech that don’t serve the mood of the scene. For example, if you’re curled up with a book and are deep in the midst of a chapter depicting an airplane hijacking, you wouldn’t want to read, “The clouds outside the window were castles in the sky."

I get the impression that Ms. Woginrich writes a lot but doesn't read a lot. Reading a lot of fiction and especially suspense fiction would give her a better idea of how it's done.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Even with a 3.5yo home with me I finished within a week.
The author, Jenna Woginrich, stated on social media that Birchthorn is only worth the cost of a coffee drink and not much more. I disagree. That's higher praise than is due this novella. The writing is overly dramatic and full of idioms and cliches. The editing is lacking. Buyer beware!
I really wanted to give this story a try. Its so poorly done. Do not expect anything to work when it comes to the bones of this story, the farming parts, the animals parts and or way its set up have many glaring issues.

Anyone with knowledge of farming, animal care or love of history is going have a very hard time with it..

Its got a few interesting twists and turns to the plot but it feels forced in so many areas and ways- rarely do you feel that the words flowed. There is a choppiness to the writing that shows that this is a first try for the writer.

Having said that, I do think that it would be a ok teen fiction reading or if you can get past the issues listed above that you could enjoy it. The only reason that its two star is that I think it could be a good teen read.. otherwise, from a adult or a person with interesting in history, farming or outstanding writing.. I am sad to say that it should be a one star.
Not much fun to be had here, other than the painfully bad metaphors and similes; my favorites were "shot a smile like buckshot," "dead as a hammer," and "calm as a house." Made it a bit of a page turner to see which gem like that would come next! Otherwise pretty tedious with poor character development, rough editing, and unsatisfying resolution. I've enjoyed some of the author's nonfiction and was hoping this would be a promising new direction for her writing, but this was a rough slog without a lot to recommend it.
I ordered this book because I could easily afford it and because the sample was so poorly written that I felt compelled to comment. Unflattering reviews, based on the sample alone, are being disparaged by the author as being proffered by "trolls" who are out to ruin her, so I felt it only fair that I buy Birchthorn and offer my review from the prized prospective of a "verified purchaser". This book is written in a bizarre mix of very simple declarative sentences and stilted prose. A person utters a "concerned swear", a stallion is as "calm as a house", the heroine is "huffing" one minute and "staring daggers" the next. Bloodclots are described as being the "side (sic) of apples" and maggots, "the size of fists". Adam,
who meets a doctor on the train, is relieved to be "sitting next to a level head". Anna's prized horse, "Sir" has been auctioned off as
"foddertrot for poor man's stew and leather" and odd expressions like "beyond ken" are tossed around in an apparent attempt to add historical legitimacy. As if the reader doesn't have enough trouble on his hands with this tortured writing, the author herself loses her way in several instances using the wrong names for characters and not even catching her own mistake. Ms. Woginrich implores readers of her blog to purchase Birchthorn and begs for honest reviews, so here you have mine. This book is a mess. Save your money.
I read a sample of this work early on, mostly because I was trying to figure out what that cover art was! Ha! I could not get through the sample.
Later out of curiosity I went back to read reviews to see what others thought and discovered that there is some controversy brewing over this book. Some people say the reviews are bad because Woginrich has Haters. I'd already left a comment on another persons review saying I'd not been able to finish the sample, but I got to wondering if maybe I didn't give this young author a fair chance so I broke down and bought the book.
Omg, this book is a real stinker, even for a first foray into fiction. I hate to give bad reviews and rarely do, but what a waste of money this book is.
My 14 yr old goddaughter is a better writer. Woginrich needs a creative writing class in a bad way! 99 cents would be a semi-fair price for this book. Free would be better. This is a verified purchase and I had no prior knowledge of this author. I've not read any of her other non-fiction books, but after reading this one, I have no desire to try even a sample of the others.
For a short novella this was a bit of a slog to read due to the overuse of similes and odd idioms.
