In 1962 at the age of fifteen Margaret begins to realize that her choices in life are very limited by the expectations of her working class parents, ‘girls get married, don’t they?’ She knows even then that there is more to life than this but feels helpless to alter anything.
Although she feels rebellious at first, she soon accepts the status quo and life as a married woman begins before she is out of her teens.
Her tortuous journey takes her through several marriages, education, tragedy and laughter and even into prison before she realizes that she needs to be her own woman.
This is a story that women (and some men) of any age will relate to, it is the story not of just one woman but all women and especially women of the seventies who changed the perceptions of a generation and those who came afterwards…
Girls Get Married Don't They? eBook Kate Roberts
The `Product Description' of this book makes it sound rather mundane, even dull. How wrong could that be! Kate Roberts' deliciously clever prose opens a fascinating and compelling window into Margaret's early family life that is the equal of any well-known modern writer in this vane. As the protagonist, Margaret never seems to understand that her acute observations of her parents and sisters mirror her own life and that her present and future are totally shaped by her upbringing. The journey from a teenager full of hope and confidence and unwittingly in love with love, to a young woman bowled over by her first multi-dimensional man and swiftly trapped in a world she couldn't see coming, to a passion for someone whose self-centered view of life leaves her totally isolated, is tragic - and oh so predictable if only she could see it. Left in an emotional void, the realisation that she has neither the love of, nor any real love for, her own children is not even painful. It is not until the last minute that she realises her own choices have been the cause of most of the cracks in her life and her final choice, to distance herself from her family, is made in the hope that the new life she seeks will also bring reconciliation between herself, her sons and her husband. This seems to be billed as a `woman's book' but as a man I found myself totally drawn in to Margaret's life.
